A Guide to a Perfect House Move: Tips from the Experts
Moving house is one of the most stressful events in life but with some careful planning and calling in some help, you can make the house move a lot easier. Whether you are moving to a bigger place, downsizing or heading to a new area, here are some top tips to make the move go more smoothly:
Have a clear-out
Before you start packing, go through all of your belongings to check whether there are items that are no longer of use or that could be better used by someone else. We have a tendency to keep hold of items that we no longer require ‘just in case we might need them one day. Be ruthless and clear out the non-sentimental items that you no longer really need especially bulky items. A charity shop might benefit from some of the belongings you no longer need.
You will also need to use up freezer food and other food items in the fridge in the weeks leading up to the move unless you will be able to quickly transfer the food into a fridge or freezer in your new home.
Decide where your furniture will go
Using the floorplan measurements, choose where your furniture will go in your new home, to ensure that there will be enough room for everything. It will usually be easier if you dismantle the furniture in advance, to save time and make sure there are no unnecessary delays or problems. Make sure any screws or bolts are placed into separate, labelled bags for each item.
Removal company or self-move?
Using a removal company will usually make the moving process a lot easier but if you have access to a van and some careful helpers, you could save some money by doing it yourself. If you are going to do it yourself, you need to collect adequate storage boxes to pack your belongings into.
When you are packing the boxes, label the box with the room that it will be going into and also write a description of what is in each box. It will also help to order the boxes by number, going from 1 (1st in the van) upwards, finishing with the boxes you will need to open first, such as kitchen items, bedding, toiletries and clothing you will need for your first night in your new home.
Packing and transporting
When packing up your belongings, make sure that any fragile items are well protected and the box has a clear label to say it is fragile, or use fragile tape if possible. If you are hiring a removal company, you might want to move your own smaller valuables and fragile items.
Unpacking
When your items arrive at your new home, the first items you should take in are your bulky furniture. Otherwise, you will end up having to move other boxes to fit your furniture in later on. The numbers and labels should help to ensure that everything goes to the right room.

If you are moving out of a rented property, it is important that you leave the property in as good condition as possible, so a deep clean service could help ensure that the landlord does not withhold any of your deposit.
